Smoking is everywhere. Look around you and I am sure you would probably find something in relation to smoking. Its a connecting piece of our changing society. People can smoke for many reason, stress, rebellion, peer pressure or just for fun(just to name a few). People even smoke socially and not constantly depends on the person. They film shown in our lecture I feel was contradicting to be honest, Smoking is portrayed in the film and as stylish and cool, even seductive yet , is portrayed in them media to the public as bad, dangerous disgusting- try get your head around that!
Smokers are apparently getting younger in regards to the age when they start the habit. I'm an ex-smoker, can not say it is the best thing i have ever done, probably will not be the worst either. I started young 11 going on 12. Yeah I know its bad, I was talented at sports, yet that didn't phase me. I think a mixture of family issues, events and peer pressure contributed into me starting smoking. When your young there is a lot of pressure especially if your friends smoke. Its funny because I remember when I first got offered a cigarette, I turned it down as my Granddad had just had a life saving cancer operation. I suppose I was scared of developing cancer, yet when I hit secondary school that didn't phase me into not smoking. Maybe it was a way of dealing with issues or thinking back just pure rebellion. I used to find it hilarious getting chased by teachers around the school fields, when nearly getting caught smoking, gave me a kind of rush . It was a laugh especially with everyone else. I remember adults telling me to quit, the more they said it the more it pushed me to smoking more, i had control - no one could take that away from me! I remember quitting. I was 16, just found out someone I knew had cancer. Surprisingly it wasn't too bad quitting as i thought it be and can now 2 years on, honestly say cravings were in my head. It was soo hard the first few days and of course i had a few cheeky drags of a fag the first two days, then went cold turkey! I had sort of conditioned myself that if I picked up a cigarette something bad would happen, have not smoked since and probably would not again, but never say never!
Smoking can harm your health and many agencies offer tools and advice into quitting. The NHS is the main one. http://http//smokefree.nhs.uk/why-go-smokefree/benefits-of-going-smokefree/ others include Quitlinehttp://http//www.quit.org.uk/ and Quitwithhelphttp://https//www.quitwithhelp.co.uk/default.aspx?gclid=COz-gPLB0qACFRg8lAodFGHIzA. These agencies all offer support and advice. They is an on growing craze in to using Nicotine patches and gum etc to help aid the quitting process. However these do come at a price and in my opinion can become highly addictive( family members use them). You quit the cigarettes yet become hooked on using these smoking aids madness.
Second hand smoking is also now a major concern in our society and the public are made aware of this more now than they did a few years ago. I feel that as long as no one blows it in my face, they can smoke around me, didn't do me any6harm growing up people smoking around me- YET, so I think people should smoke where they want but they should take into consideration other people. The Ban on smoking in Pubs and Clubs is ridiculous- what is the point- its stupid. Its more hassle than its worth. In my opinion people just will not go out as much anymore and,as a result which would mean less money going in the economy etc. However after reading http://http//www.smokefreeengland.co.uk/http://http//www.smokefreeengland.co.uk/ I can see the point in a 'healthier Britain'.
I suppose individuals will have various opinions in relation to smoking and these will differ tremendously, I think its down to the individual and it is their choice. If the government were that concerned why don t they make it illegal like other drugs- ooo i know because they would loose money- go figure!
